DfT is responsible for ensuring that the UK transport system works for everyone, as well as considering the needs of the economy, the environment and society as a whole.

Delivering an effective transport system is underpined by a number of strategic objectives including: improved productivity through reliable and efficient transport networks; greater environmental performance; strengthened safety and security; and enhanced access to jobs, services and social networks.

To achieve its goals, the department uses a strategic framework (comprising a mix of regulation, contracting, subsidy and incentive), which is used with a wide range of partners who are responsible for the provision of transport services.
