Transport

The Department of Transport (DfT) is responsible for ensuring that the UK transport system works for everyone, as well as considering the needs of the economy, the environment and society as a whole.

Delivering an effective transport system is underpined by a number of strategic objectives including: improved productivity through reliable and efficient transport networks; greater environmental performance; strengthened safety and security; and enhanced access to jobs, services and social networks.

To achieve its goals, the department uses a strategic framework (comprising a mix of regulation, contracting, subsidy and incentive), which is used with a wide range of partners who are responsible for the provision of transport services.
