About the Department of Health The Department of
Health is a department of the UK government with responsibility for government
policy for England alone on Health, Social Care and the National Health Service
(NHS). It controls ten Strategic
Health Authorities (SHAs), which oversee all National Health Service
operations, particularly those of the Primary Care
Trusts (PCTs), in their area. The department also carries out some of its work through 'Arms Length
Bodies' (ALBs), including executive agencies such as NHS Purchasing
and Supply Authority (PASA) and Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory
Agency (MHRA). The Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health works with Health
Ministers and Parliamentary Under Secretarys to develop health and social care
policy. The department is advised by six Chief Professional Officers who provide
it with expert knowledge and advice. As the NHS is currently celebrating its 60th birthday, the DH has
commissioned 'Our NHS, Our Future', a year long review being led by Lord Darzi,
giving operational staff, clinicians and the public the opportunity to shape the
vision for the NHS over the next decade.Current public campaigns relate to
Social Care recruitment, 'Getting off Cigarettes', Enabling Choice, Sexual
Health, Antibiotic usage, daily vitamin intake and respiratory and hand hygiene. More information ...
