About this sector The Strategic Health Authorities
are part of the structure of the NHS in England and prior to 2002 were known as
NHS Health Authorities. A significant reorganisation took place in 2006, which
saw twenty eight SHAs reduced in number to ten. However, they have retained the
Board and governance structures common to all NHS Trusts. The SHAs are
coterminous with the Government Office Regions of England, except that the large
South East England region is divided into two (South Central and South East
Coast). Each SHA is responsible for enacting the directives and implementing the
fiscal policy as directed by the Department of Health (DH). Within each SHA there are varying numbers and configurations of NHS Trusts
which take responsibility for running or commissioning local NHS services. The
SHA is responsible for the strategic supervision of these services. Currently a
main priority for the SHAs is their involvement in the 'Our NHS, our Future
process' review being led by Lord Darzi. Each SHA is working to finalise its
vision documents, setting out the shape of regional healthcare for the next
decade. Additional priorities for SHAs are the implementation of World Class
Commissioning and a System Management culture. More information ...
